My extension responsibilities fall broadly within the area of urban ecosystems, and my program’s current emphasis is on the intersection of urbanization and pollinator health. Here are some of our resources and ongoing projects.
Pollinator Garden Planner
WE ARE BUILDING AN ONLINE APPLICATION TO MAP AND VISUALIZE INSECT-FRIENDLY GARDENS.
Over the past decade, scientists and the public have become more aware of declines in the health of managed honey bees, as well as populations of wild bees such as bumble bees. To help counteract these declines, many programs encourage individuals to install “pollinator gardens.” These habitats draw on lists of recommended, perennial plants that provide pollen and nectar for bees. Although these habitats can be effective, we have noted that garden design remains a barrier for many individuals, who are unsure how to create a beautiful garden using recommended pollinator plants.

CONFERENCES
Protecting Pollinators in Urban Landscapes Conference
The Protecting Pollinators in Urban Landscapes Conference is an opportunity for researchers, educators and practitioners to exchange information, ideas, and experiences related to pollinator health and conservation in urban and ornamental landscapes. We are now planning the 2022 conference.
